ALPAMAYO CLIMBING TOUR

CLIMBING - ALPAMAYO (5947m)

This is a complete itinerary starting and ending in the capital city of Lima. After traveling to the city of Huaraz, located in the northern area of Peru, you will have a couple of days to acclimatize and see some sites before attempting this climb. This is the most beautiful mountain in Huascaran National Park. After a couple of days trek, we reach the base camp in the Arhuaycocha Valley. In the following couple of days we install a High-Altitude Camp and carry our gear up bit by bit. From there, we will have a good chance at reaching the summit of Mt. Alpamayo in the company of an expert, local mountain guide.

Itinerary

Day One: LIMA – HUARAZ

You will be picked up from your hotel or hostel in Lima by your local representative and transferred to the bus station. You are travelling by bus to the city of Huaraz today. In Huaraz you are met by your local guide who will be accompanying you for your time in the Huaraz area.

Day Two: HUARAZ – CHAVIN

A day tour to the site of Chavin de Huantar. The Chavin Culture is the oldest, major culture in Peru (1300 - 400 BC). The ruins at Chavin de Huantar consist of a large main square which has a staircase leading into the “Castillo”. This is a three-storey, 13 metre high building which houses many chambers and tunnels – many of them underground. There are no windows or doors (other than the main entrance) but the whole complex was so well-designed that there is virtually no mustiness. A 4 metre high stone dagger can be found in the heart of the building.

Day Three: HUARAZ – CASHAPAMPA - ICHICCOCHA

Transfer from Huaraz to the village of Cashapampa from where we start the trek with our “arrieros” and donkeys. We enter a canyon in the Santa Cruz Valley which leads us to our camp at Icchicocha (3800m).

Day Four: ICCHICOCHA – BASE CAMP

We pursue the rise along the Santa Cruz River, passing by Lake Jatuncocha with its turquoise waters until arriving at the entrance of the Arhuaycocha Valley. Then we ascend an easy slope towards the Alpamayo base camp. There we make camp, in the shadows of Quitaraju, Alpamayo, and Pucahirca.

Day Five: BASE CAMP – MORRAINE

Today, after preparing all our material and supplies, we start the approach to the mountain, setting up a camp close to the glacier. The path leading to Camp I starts on the right bank of the river of the Arhueycocha Valley (cairn). We reach the river and cross it at the easiest point. Then we follow the left bank and enter a forest on the right. We will rejoin the river. We stay on the right bank and continue towards our camp.

Day Six: MORRAINE– CAMP II

To reach the glacier, we climb the moraine along a route marked by many cairns. Then we continue climbing the glacier towards a snowy pass (40°) and arrive at Camp II (5200m).
