CHOPICALQUI (6354m)
CHCHP

Recently, this mountain has become a must to climb because the Huascaran peak is getting harder and more dangerous to attempt. Difficult access and impressive glaciers make the climb to Chopicalqui very demanding. The ridge to reach the summit offers a challenge which will stay in your memory for long time. NOTE : We recommend that you complete a trek to acclimatize before attempting this climb - see our Trekking Programmes.

Itinerary

Day 1 HUARAZ - QDA ANCOSH - BASE CAMP CHOPICALQUI

The approach path to the high camp of Chopicalqui leaves from a hairpin bend of the Llanganuco trail after Yuraccorral, at the entrance of the Quebrada Ancosh. We will follow the path on the right marked by cairns. Then we reach the crest of the morraine and follow it for a few meters before descending into the Chopicalqui Moraine Valley. We cross the Valley and then head towards the path going up the other side. At this point we follow the crest of a steep moraine which leads directly to the camp. (About 4 - 5 hours hike, 4 km)
Accom - Tent / Meals - L, D

Day 2 BASE CAMP - HIGH CAMP

We leave our base camp, taking the necessary items for the next two-day climb. From the high camp we head towards the glacier and climb it, making a detour to the right. Then we pass under a minor peak and gain a series of plateaux leading to a pass. (Camp I, 3 - 4 hrs)
Accom - Tent / Meals - B, L, D

Day 3 HIGH CAMP - CHOPICALQUI - HIGH CAMP

From our camp we go towards the SW ridge, bypassing one or more large crevasses, and climb the first slope (50°). We follow a narrow, airy snow crest leading to the foot of the summit ridge. The final section is made difficult by the altitude and deep snow. Descent by the same route.
