HUASCARAN (6768m)
CHHSN

HUASCARAN is the highest mountain in the Huascaran National Park. We can reach the summit thanks to the support of the local people who have been successfully trained over the years in mountaineering in the Cordillera Blanca. The location of several camps before attempting the summit allows us to acclimatize, otherwise we strongly recommend you to do a 4-5 day hike in the National Park before this expedition. See our treks in Cordillera Blanca.

Itinerary

Day 1 HUARAZ - MUSHO - BASE CAMP

Transfer from Huaraz to the village of Musho from where you start the trek accompanied by donkeys to carry the equipment. An easy 3-4 hour hike leads us our base camp.
Accom - Tent / Meals - L, D

Day 2 BASE CAMP - MORRAINE

Today we start carrying all our supplies (with the help of our porters) to the limits of the glacier. To reach the moraine camp, we go right to some large smooth slabs and climb them easily. Then we cross a stream and climb a grassy gully to reach the foot of a large smooth slab which can be climbed on friction. We cross a system of moraines, then some more rock slabs; we set up our camp at 4800m on flat bare ground next to a stream and at the foot of a gentle ridge which leads directly to the glacier.
Accom - Tent / Meals - B, L, D

Day 3 MORRAINE - CAMP I

We climb on the wide, undulating slopes of the glacier and set up Camp I (5400m) directly under a serac zone, which is the crux of the climb.
Accom - Tent / Meals - B, Snack, D

Day 4 CAMP I - CAMP II

We start climbing the corridor (45°) or an ice wall a few meters high (85°) depending on the time of year. Traverse under the west flank of South Huascarán towards the Garganta (5900m) - a windy pass joining the South and North Peaks of Huascarán (6654m). Camp at 5900m.
Accom - Tent / Meals - B, L, D

Days 5 & 6 CAMP II - SUMMIT

An early start before the sun rises, we skirt the base of the northwest face of the south summit and climb a snow corridor shortly before a dangerous serac zone. We then traverse right towards a group of small seracs. After that, we climb another corridor to join the final slope which is climbed to the southeast then to the summit. Descent by the same route. (8 - 9 hrs)
Accom - Tent / Meals - B, Snack, D

Day 7 CAMP II - BASE CAMP

After enjoying the views from the summit we descend to the base camp to enjoy a well-deserved hot dinner.
Accom - Tent / Meals - B, L, D

Day 8 BASE CAMP - MUSHO - HUARAZ

Time to go back to city-life - our arrieros and mules meet us to bring us back to Musho for the bus to Huaraz.
Meals - B, L
