Guatemala

Guatemala is a country rich in culture, tradition, and possibilities for adventure travel. Sometimes it is hard to choose from all the activities that are possible. The following itinerary provides a mixture of cultural, archaeological, and outdoor experiences. Longer itineraries are available upon request.

Day Four: PANAJACHEL – SAN MARCOS – SANTIAGO ATITLAN - PANAJACHEL

You catch the boat to Santa Cruz and walk along the cliff to San Marcos (about 4 hours). From San Marcos you take the boat to Santiago Atitlan, an indigenous village on the south side of the lake. There you can see Maximon, a Mayan saint. He is not a person, however, but a wooden figure, which represents the spirit of the world for the Maya. In the afternoon you return to Panajachel by boat.

Day Five: PANAJACHEL – CHICHICASTANANGO – GUATEMALA CITY

You transfer from Panajachel to Chichicastenango, to visit the biggest and most colourful Indian Market in Central America. You can also see the Santo Thomas church, where you can observe a unique synergy of Catholic and Maya traditional rites. A 15-minute walk outside of Chichicastanango is a small hill with Pascual Abaj, a Maya shrine, where still today ceremonies are conducted and animals sacrificed. It is not uncommon to observe a ceremony there. In the afternoon transfer to Guatemala for the night.
