MANU BIO TRIP
JGMBI

The word "Manu" has become synonymous with the best rainforest in the world, owing to the fact that it is host to more plant and animal species than any other place on Earth. In the Manu National Park there are 1000 species of birds and it is possible to see 550 of then in a few square kilometres. One of its most enchanting attractions is the Macaw Lick "Collpa", where hundreds of birds visit daily to eat the clay which helps their digestion. There is also a Tapir Lick (where you can see the largest mammal in South America) as well as Monkeys, Jaguars and Giant Otters. On this trip you also have the chance to see the National Bird of Peru - the elegant Cock-of-the-Rock.

Itinerary

Day 1 CUZCO - SELVA SUR

We leave Cuzco very early for our journey by private bus to the Manu Cloud Forest. We climb two Andean passes of almost 4000m. This area is a bird-lovers paradise. After around 7 hours we arrive at the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge (in the Selva Sur private Cloud Forest Reserve) where we will spend the night.

Day 2 SELVA SUR - PANTIACOLLA LODGE

We get up early to visit the Cock-of-the-Rock Clay Lick. Then you can spend some time walking on the road looking out for other Cloud Forest birds and Woolly Monkeys. We then depart in our bus for Atalaya. We arrive in 3-4 hours and eat our box lunch by the Madre de Dios River. We then board a motorized canoe for a 2 hour trip to the Pantiacolla Lodge. If there is time you can start to explore the 20km of trails nearby.

Day 3 PANTIACOLLA LODGE - MANU WILDLIFE CENTRE

You have some time to take a hike around the trails before leaving to Manu Wildlife Centre. On the way we stop at the Piro Indian Village. After around 6 hours we arrive at the Centre for a late lunch. After resting to escape the afternoon heat you have the chance to hike around the nearby jungle trails.

Days 4 & 5 MANU WILDLIFE CENTRE

The first morning we get up at 04:30 to leave at 05:15 for the 25 minute boat ride to the Macaw Clay Lick. We will board the large mobile "blind" that will be positioned close to the Macaws once they have chosen their eating spot. After watching the small birds for about an hour we will have a pancake breakfast aboard the blind (this is a large catamaran which holds 18 people comfortably - it has a private bathroom in the rear). The large Macaws usually arrive at around 08:00 and we will leave the area when they have finished eating. If there is time, we can visit an Oxbow Lake to search for Giant Otters before returning to the Lodge for lunch.
On the second morning, we will visit the two Oxbow Lakes in the area - Lake Blanco and Lake Camungo. Here we will see many water birds and, hopefully, Giant Otters. Each of these two lakes is used regularly by these 2m long predators .

In the afternoons you may walk on the 48km of jungle trails near the Lodge. Outings on the trails include a visit to a Lookout over the Madre de Dios River, Monkey spotting and fruit trees among others.
In the evenings you may take a 3km stroll out to the Tapir Lick. The first Tapirs usually arrive between 21:30 and 23:00 and you can leave at this time or you can spend the night on our elevated viewing platform (this measures 5m x 2.5m and is equipped with Thermarests and small inflatable pillows).
