R A F T I N G
TAMBOPATA
RTAMB

The Tambopata River starts on the Peru-Bolivia border, and, when it rains in the mountains the river can rise substantially in a very short time. It is one of the most inaccessible and fascinating rivers of South America. The unspoiled region has an abundance and variety of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species. This region is much more remote than the Manu National Park and we will not experience signs of civilization, e.g.: miners, scientists, tourist lodges or even other tourists.

The Tambopata River is a paradise for giant butterflies, river otters, various species of monkeys and bird-life, as well as Jaguars, tapirs, caimans and capybaras. (Fish are abundant and if you enjoy fishing you are welcome to bring your gear, but please take into consideration our space limitations.) This is a great opportunity for photographs!

Itinerary

Day 1 CUZCO - PUNO

Transfer from Cuzco to Puno (8hrs) visiting the Sillustani ruins en-route. In the evening, there will be a briefing session, review of equipment and familiarization of procedures on the expedition.
ACCOM - Hotel / Meals - L, D

Day 2 PUNO - SANDIA

We leave Puno very early, heading back out on the main road to Cuzco past Juliaca and Pucyura. From here we take a detour towards Azangaro, passing through the villages of Saman, Arapa and Muñani. During the bus ride we will have views of the surrounding "puna" (highland savannah) and the Andean communities of herders and weavers. We reach Cuyo Cuyo (3000m) in the afternoon. Leaving Cuyo Cuyo we descend into the cloud forest to reach Sandia where we will stay the night.

Day 3 SANDIA - PUTINA PUNCO

We leave Sandia early to travel to Putina Punko. Along the way we can admire the villages and small archaeological groups. We climb to 3800m to then descend again to Putina Punco and what is considered to be "high-jungle" at 1050m. Here we set up camp, unload the gear, pack the rafts and load the boats ready for the morning.
ACCOM - Tent / Meals - B, L, D

Day 4 to Day 9 ON THE TAMBOPATA

The daily routine includes about 5-6 hours of rafting with an hour for lunch-stops en route, setting up camps on exposed beaches along the river. We will scout the most important rapids as a safety precaution.
We will be accompanied by an experienced river guide who will explain about the interesting habitants, lifestyles and incredible world of the forest, and will be pleased to answer your questions. We also include half-day treks into the surrounding wilderness. All of these beautiful scenes and once in a lifetime opportunities only complement the adrenaline thrill of running Class III - IV rapids.
Paddle power is more logical than motorized canoes because the wildlife is disturbed by the unnatural noise. Towards the last few days the river slows down and the terrain opens.

Day 10 TAMBOPATA

Where the Tambopata and Tabara Rivers join we get picked up by a motorboat and transferred to our lodge near the Tambopata Macaw Lick - "Collpa de Guacamayos".
ACCOM - Lodge / Meals - B, L, D

Day 11 TAMBOPATA - PUERTO MALDONADO

Leaving very early (05:30) we visit the Collpa to observe the magnificent bird-life. We continue in our motorized canoe, reaching Puerto Maldonado in the afternoon and transferring to our hotel.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Cuzco. When you arrive you will be transferred to your hotel.
